Disappointing Result in Home Opener

We fell in our home opener to Arizona last night, 4-0. Thanks to all the wonderful supporters that came out to cheer for the Utes...we had a great crowd and the Utah Drum Line was fantastic at halftime.

It's always disappointing to fall short, especially at home. But it was probably our best performance of the new season in many ways. We held the ball better in attack and put good pressure on the Arizona team all over the field. After giving up an early goal, we chased the game.
With about ten minutes left and the score still at 1-0, we took out a defender and put in an extra forward to try to equalize. It back fired a bit as we gave up 3 goals in the last 10 minutes, but it was worth the risk and we'll have to keep working on our approach at the end of the game when we need to score.

No rest for the weary as we take on the Georgia Bulldogs tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:00 P.M. at Ute Field. Here's to bouncing back and a better result!

2008 Captains Bring Leadership, Experience to Young Group

The captains for our 2008 Utah team are (left to right) Emalee Rogers, Danielle Sample, Katy Reineke and Amanda Sanchez.

All have been an integral part of our program since 2005 (Sanchez is a red-shirt senior and joined the group in 2004). They are a talented bunch and have done a great job since early in the summer of welcoming a large group of new players and quickly getting us on the same page as we start a new season. They have been chosen to take on a great deal of responsibility in order to help us reach some lofty goals. It's clear that the players respect these veteran players and we expect they will continue to do a great job.

Overtime Goal Brings 1st win of the Year

It was hot...we were dropping like flies from fatigue and injury...the home team was pressing for a goal...and just when it seemed like things were looking VERY dark...we scored! And the result was a very hard-earned 2-1 Overtime win against a good UNC Greensboro team. It was a great show of character and teamwork. After a fine first half, featuring the first collegiate goal scored by freshman Katie Martinez, the home team really came out fired up for the second period. We struggled to find our game and couldn't keep the ball well...some fundamental mistakes were happening...however, the team never broke and stuck together. It was a great sign of a winning spirit that we hope to bring us a successful season.

Tough Loss but Good Effort

We lost the first game of the season tonight against the Demon Deacons. It was a tough loss in that we got the game into overtime but couldn't hold on, falling 2-1. Read more about it at our Utah Utes web site here.

We have a very young team right now and each game provides valuable experience. Playing against a very good Wake team will serve us well as we continue to develop and learn. Several freshman players make their debuts tonight....Lauren Porter, Katie Martinez, Chelsea Forbes, Kellie Woodfield, and Anne Shallenberger all played in their first game as a Ute.

We had many others that got some important minutes...Christine Quinn played in just her second game. Emalee Rogers got her second career start. Morgan Skeen only played in eight games last year before injuring her knee. Nicole Cardon and Lauren Hair must feel like grizzled veterans with all of 21 games each under their belts.

The first game of the season can be surprising in that the game is faster and more physical than any practice or scrimmage. Also, there is the communication, team movement and combination play that needs to come together. There is no better way to start that learning process than to test ourselves against a quality team like Wake.

We have a terrific group of players that are united and determined to become an outstanding team. And we are confident that we will improve with each game. The more we play together...the better we will become.

We will stay in Winston-Salem tonight and then head out to Greensboro in the morning for a practice. And get ready for another big game against UNC Greensboro on Sunday.

Fun night at the baseball game

More notes from the baseball game....watch here as Danielle Sample and Addie Hair interview Wally the Warthog and find out if he's a fan of the Utah Utes...if he can take on the Utes and more...professional journalism as its finest!

Utes' Travel Notes on Tobacco Road

The first road trip of the season started yesterday (Wednesday) as we flew from SLC to Raleigh-Durham airport. With the two hour time difference, we arrived at 12:00 A.M. local time and got to the hotel in Winston-Salem at about 1:15 A.M. It's amazing how IHOP, Wendy's and MacDonalds' can sound so good when nothing else is open!

Thursday was EVENTFUL to say the least. It began with the nail-biting Gold Medal Soccer Game between the USA and Brazil, which the US won by a 1-0 score in overtime.

Then we headed off to the campus of Wake Forest University, just five minutes away for a little day-before-the-game kick around. Spry Stadium, the home of the Demon Deacon soccer team, is a beautiful park for soccer and we are looking forward to Friday's game.

After training and dinner, we walked a few blocks to Ernie Shore Stadium to watch the minor league baseball game between the Winston-Salem Warthogs and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The evening was relaxing and filled with all kinds of fun...we will be using material from the game on the blog for a while! It was Cap Night, so the team members each got a free baseball cap. And the team was introduced during the middle of the 4th inning. See photos and video below for more fun!

Sophomores Alyssa Toomey and Morgan Skeen participate in a "dance off" during the 6th inning break...This is stuff of Ute team legend and there will be video to come....Can't Miss TV here!

Scrimmage, Part Two

Saturday brought another scrimmage day. The Utes played a 10 vs. 10 format...with 30 minute halves...and at the end of the scrimmage, there was a 20 minute session on set pieces.

The team will take a much needed day off on Sunday (except for some getting treatment). Many of the players will use the day to move into the dorms. Freshman Katie Martinez, from the Denver, Colorado area...had her parents and sisters drive into town to help with the move tomorrow. And, freshman goal keeper, Hannah Turpen, was visited by her folks and two brothers, who drove up from Orange County, California.

The team will resume preparations for next Friday's season opener (at Wake Forest) on Monday morning. The time off should allow several players with strains, pulls, dings and general soreness to regenerate for the start of the season.

Team BBQ finishes Double Days Sessions

After 10 days of preseason...with many of those days consisting of two practices...the Utes decided to cool off by the pool as the grandparents of junior, Danielle Sample, generously hosted the team and coaches for a fun-filled afternoon BBQ and swim party. Here Danielle chats with her family....mother Chris, grandfather Bob Meyer, father Jay, and grandmother Carol Meyer...

The events included water basketball...a Michael Phelps "swim-a-like" contest...which was won by senior Katy Reineke. The new hit backyard game of "ladders"...play with Rachel (the 20 month old daughter of Ute assistant coach, Laurel Roderick. And relax and munch on great food from Famous Dave's!

Ute players enjoy the BBQ and re-live horror stories from this year's pre-season soccer camp...

Utes First Scrimmage A Success

Notes from Thursday evening's scrimmage....

The game was played in two 30-minute halves...
Teams played 10 - a - side as Roxy Tebbs (hip flexor) and Jen Christoffers (sprained MCL) sat out with injuries.

Yellow Team (1st half)
Emalee Rogers, Nicole Cardon, Lauren Porter, Lauren Dudley, Morgan Skeen, Katie Martinez, Katie Brower, Mallory Mitamura, Chelsea Forbes, Anne Shallenberger

White Team (1st half)
Amy Edman, Addie Hair, Christine Quinn, Alyssa Toomey, Kellie Woodfield, Danielle Sample, Katy Reineke, Amanda Sanchez, Kelly Isleib, Lauren Hair

The white team had a ton of possession and pressure on goal...but it was the yellow team that got on board first on a counter attack as Chelsea Forbes sent a ball behind the defense and Mallory Mitamura put it away. The white team tied it up as Christine Quinn nodded home a corner kick with a close-range header.

Christine Quinn's header from a corner kick highlighted the first half of tonight's scrimmage.

Yellow Team (2nd half)
Hannah Turpen, Nicole Cardon, Lauren Porter, Morgan Skeen, Addie Hair, Katie Martinez, Amanda Sanchez, Kellie Woodfield, Kelly Isleib, Anne Shallenberger

White Team (2nd half)
Shay Kennedy, Alyssa Toomey, Lauren Dudley, Christine Quinn, Mallory Mitamura, Danielle Sample, Katy Reineke, Chelsea Forbes, Lauren Hair

The second period of action featured two goals by the white team....Danielle Sample floated in a long shot over the head of goal keeper Hannah Turpen. And Lauren Hair knifed through a double-team in the box and placed a shot beautifully into the far corner...

Danielle Sample (left) and Lauren Hair (right) each notched a goal in the 2nd half...

Busy Day at Ute Field

After a day of rest on Sunday and a busy Monday, filled with two practices...Tuesday provided a change of pace as well as a lot of activity for the Utes. . .

Meeting at 2:00 P.M., consisting of a chalk talk on defense and set pieces...followed by practice at 3:30 P.M. Then the real action started...

Sports Information Director, Kyle Harris, came out with a photographer to get some action shots of the new players. Kyle has been busy finishing up the media guide. Kyle and the photographer then took some action photos of Katie Brower and Addie Hair, who acted as body part models...Katie and Addie took shots at goal for the photographer...the marketing department will use the feet and ball for some advertising this season...

Then the Utes took to getting our beautiful stadium (known as "Ute Field") ready for the season. The players and coaches helped put up our wind screen and get the bleachers cleaned up for the home opener on August 29 vs. the University of Arizona.

Here grounds keeper, Ron Snarr (in the red shirt and hat), instructs Christine Quinn and others on how to attach the screen.

Grounds keeper, Gavin Gough, directs the finishing touches on the lower portion of the fencing. Lauren Hair (in the white shirt) hands out the plastic ties to get things secured.

Danielle Sample, Katy Reineke and Morgan Skeen do an impression of the old "Kilroy was here" cartoon from atop the stands as they apply the last piece of stadium dressing.

After the project was complete, Ron Snarr and Gavin Gough cooked up some burgers and goodies for the team. Assistant Athletic Director Zack Lassiter came by with his 2-year-old son, Luke, to enjoy the facilities.

Here Luke works on his finishing skills...
Maybe a future Real Salt Lake star?

Lots going on this week...

Captains to be named...
The debut of the Under Armour gear...
Team scrimmage on Thursday night...

Cabin Fever: Exclusive Video

Okay, the blog has obtained exclusive video of the Utes' weekend getaway. First, we have a bit of the knock-down, drag-out foosball match between Utah natives Kelly Isleib and Katy Reineke...and Cal North gals Leslie Keener and Amanda Sanchez. It was a match fought with great intentions...but not the most elegant thing in the world...Notice that Katy has yet to master the foosball etiquette of not spinning your men...Also, a WARNING...you will notice Morgan Skeen doing a very loud and very interesting impression of a rock singer in the background...you may want to turn the sound down...way down!

Now watch Ute freshman goal keeper, Hannah Turpen give her best shot at wind surfing. Now, Hannah has grown up on the beaches of San Clemente, California and is a pro at many water-related activities. We have to give her an A for effort as there wasn't much wind on the day....but in the end...SPLASH!

Cabin Fever Hits the Utes

After 3 days of hard training and competition, the Utes headed out to Oakley, Utah (about 45 minutes away) and the cabin of Ute goal keeper Amy Edman for an overnight team trip...
25 players
4 coaches
1 trainer...Morgan Collins our new athletic trainer for the year.

Just enough folks for some good "Rock Band", Foosball, Volleyball, Hula hoops, ATV riding...and, oh yeah...maybe some team conversations about the season...overall it was a much needed breather and a great time....Friday night was spent at the cabin and Saturday at beautiful Smith and Morehouse Lake down the road.

Much thanks to assistant coach, Leslie Keener, for setting it up and to Boyd Edman, Amy's father, for coming out to help us at the cabin and the lake. Okay...let's get to some photos and video...

Assistant coach Laurel Roderick shows some great balance and agility in the morning volley ball match. Roxy Tebbs and Jen Christoffers can only watch the magical shot fall in for a point.

ATV action...Chelsea Forbes, Lauren Dudley and a mystery player sandwiched in between the two enjoy a morning ride along the road...all other vehicles watch out!

Trainer Morgan Collins plays guitar as Erin Dalley drums away and Morgan Skeen belts out the notes in this rock band dream team. Freshman Lauren Porter can only watch in amazement!

Saturday was spent at Smith and Morehouse Lake. Here Mr. Edman gets the kayaks, rafts and even a wind sail ready for action!

Let's compare the technique! Freshmen Anne Shallenberger and Kellie Woodfield try the alternating-side stroke while sophomores Erin Dalley and Alyssa Toomey go for the same-side paddling...we need to set up a race!

Day 3: 4 vs. 4 Tournament Hotly Contested

Friday's training continued the theme of competition. In the morning, a hotly contested 4 vs. 4 round robin, 5-team tournament ended in a tie for first place. So, in a tie-breaking final...the team of Katy Reineke, Lauren Porter, Mallory Mitamura, Danielle Sample and goal keeper Shay Kennedy used a late flurry of goals to defeat Amanda Sanchez, Katie Martinez, Anne Shallenberger, Alyssa Toomey and goal keeper Emalee Rogers.

The afternoon session was a "survivor" competition.

5 vs. 5....
4 teams....
one goal wins the game...
winner stays on the field...

After over an hour of play, the Blue team squeaked out a 13-12 win over the Shirts team.

Lauren Hair
Katie Brower
Lauren Dudley
Alyssa Toomey
Amy Edman

After 3 days of competing...we are heading out to Amy's cabin in Oakley, Utah for some rest and team time off the field...should be a great time.

Day 2: Competition and Catch Phrase

Day 2 is in the books...more competition, fitness and game night at the Guest House. Players are definitely getting tired and are having to "grind it out" as bodies get sore and the brain wants to stop...but the players are pressing on well.

The morning practice, the team was divided into 4 groups and we played two round-robin tournaments. The first was a two-touch keep away game in a very tight space. And the second was a game with 4 small goals. The orange team of Amanda Sanchez, Lauren Hair, Nicole Cardon, Lauren Porter and Roxy Tebbs finished the session with 5 wins and 1 tie to take the trophy.

We finished with a 15 minutes scrimmage....and then it was 21 minutes of "madness" as we ran at a targeted heart rate during that time.

The team looks like it will be a skillful group and capable of some entertaining soccer.

The afternoon practice was more competition with some keep away and a game with 4 big goals. Lots of good opportunity to improve vision and reading the game!

This evening was game night, highlighted by a great battle in Catch Phrase...a quick-thinking word game....much like the old "Password" TV show.

1st Day of Practice a Success

The 2008 Utes took the field for the first time today with two training sessions at Ute Field. The morning session featured some nasty 1 vs. 1 competition as well as a full field scrimmage. The yellow team won the 40 minute game, 2-0, with Lauren Hair and Katy Reineke scoring the goals.

The afternoon session was another competition-based practice. The teams played a two-zone game complete with goal keepers. The teams each won 3 sets of this and the competition was decided by a crossing and finishing game. That went into sudden death OT.

Here senior Katy Reineke and junior Danielle Sample recap a productive (and tiring) first day...

The team has checked in to the University Guest House for the week. A beautiful little inn located on campus near the dorms and only a couple of hundred yards from Ute Field, the Guest House has everything the Utes need to stay comfortably during the preseason...

Here Ute freshmen Mallory Mitamura and Roxy Tebbs return to the Guest House this evening after dinner with new boots in tow.

The rooms in the Guest House are great for comfort and getting rest before and after training (as well as mid-day naps!)

Preseason is Here!

Well, that went by fast...

Summer vacation, summer camps, summer soccer, hopefully summer fun as well...now it's back to soccer...hard work, team work, school work, and fun as well! The 2008 Soccer Utes reported for training today...

Now the first day is not all that glamorous. Meetings, filling out forms, insurance issues, physicals...all kinds of things that need to get done. (If you can make it through the first day, you can make it through anything!).

We went to dinner as a team at Macaroni Grill in downtown Salt Lake City and checked into the Guest House... a small hotel on campus where we'll stay this week.

Practice starts tomorrow at 9:30 A.M. and we'll have a second training at 4 P.M. There are definitely a lot of butterflies and nervousness...but that's a good thing!

We'll have 10 brand new freshmen suiting up for the first time as Utah soccer team members: Lauren Dudley, Chelsea Forbes, Shay Kennedy, Katie Martinez, Mallory Mitamura, Lauren Porter, Anne Shallenberger, Roxy Tebbs, Hannah Turpen and Kellie Woodfield. Also, Katie Brower, who transferred to Utah in January, will be going through her first fall season.

They will join returners Nicole Cardon, Jen Christoffers, Erin Dalley, Amy Edman, Addie Hair, Lauren Hair, Kelly Isleib, Christine Quinn, Katy Reineke, Emalee Rogers, Danielle Sample, Amanda Sanchez, Morgan Skeen, Alyssa Toomey.

Stay tuned for more reports from Ute Training Camp...filled with videos and photos!
