Following Utah Athletics

Like many folks here in Utah, we are huge fans of many of the Utah athletic teams. Attending football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, track, gymnastics and all kind of events are some of the things our soccer team most enjoys doing during the school year.

Most of our teams have joined the technological age and are doing things like Facebook, Twitter, and even blogging! So we thought we would give you some information on how to follow your favorite team (besides soccer, of course!)...

March Madness Hits Salt Lake City

The Utes are on spring break this week, so not much team activity to write about...Howver, March is here and that means NCAA Hoops tournaments...and the madness has certainly spread to the U...

Both the men's and women's basketball teams won both the regular season and Mountain West Conference tournament titles...WOW!

So both teams were happy to find out their tournament sight and opponent.
First, on Sunday, the men's team gathered to watch the selection show on CBS...their name came up early and they will be the #5 seed in the Midwest Regional...they will play the #12 seed University of Arizona on Friday evening (5:00 PM Mountain time) in Miami! If they win, they will face the winner of the Wake Forest-Cleveland State game on Sunday.

The women's team found out their fate this evening...they got a #9 seed and will face #8 Villanova on Sunday (March 22) at 10 AM Mountain Time in Raleigh, North Carolina. The winner will face either #1 Maryland or #16 Dartmouth on Tuesday.

Utes Training at Beautiful Eccles Indoor Facility

Winter workouts start up this week with the new semester. The team will be playing and training in the beautiful Spence Eccles Field House....with a full-sized field. Check out the photo gallery by clicking here!

This time of year is dedicated to maintaining conditioning, improving athleticism, and working on the skills of soccer. The team is a bit "small" right now as last fall's seniors have finished their eligibility and won't be training with us. January workouts are limited by NCAA rules to 8 hours per week, with 2 hours spent with the ball and the other 6 spent on speed training, injury prevention and conditioning. The team will begin "spring training" in mid-February and will have games in March and April.

More news about the team to follow...

What would you endure to see your favorite team play?

So, you're favorite team... one you are passionate about...is playing in the biggest game of the year and it's a 1,900 mile trip. You don't want to pay the air fare, so what do you do?
How about renting a mobile home or a bus?

Sugar Bowl Champs!

Well, here at Ute soccer, we are fans of all the sports here at the university. And tonight was a great night for the U as the football team capped an incredible season with a 31-17 victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Here is a photo of Utah receiver, David Reed, scoring an important touchdown in the 3rd quarter...

The Utes finished with a 13-0 record with thrills and spills all along the way....

Special props to receivers coach Aaron Roderick, who is the husband of Utah soccer assistant Laurel Roderick for his part in the team's success!

We'll be covering more of the excitement with the team's success, including some reaction from the soccer players, who are thrilled for their friends on the team. For now, here are some links with more coverage of the game

Finals Week is Here

The players are busy this week...not shopping...not playing...but studying and preparing papers.
Finals week is here...exams and projects are due. The hard work is eased by the "light at the end of the tunnel"....Christmas is right around the corner!

We'll have more thoughts on Utah Soccer Christmas plans.

But, we will tell you that the University of Utah is a sports school...and there is a LOT of great stuff going on right now...

Our football team got selected to go to the Sugar Bowl, where they will meet the University of Alabama on January 2nd. How cool is that?! The soccer team is making plans to go to New Orleans or set up a TV party. We'll definitely have more news about this great event!

Our men's and women's basketball teams are in full season mode...the men will be playing local rival Weber State at the beautiful Hunstman Center on campus here on Saturday at 4:00 PM local time...then they will travel the 2 hours north to face Utah State on Monday at 7:00 PM

The women go Ogden, Utah (about 40 minutes north of the U) to face Weber State on Friday at 6:3o PM, then turn around and host Mississippi State on Saturday at 6:30 PM.

Our players will be ready to support their fellow Utes!

Utes Celebrating Big Football Victory

Last Saturday was an exciting day for the Utes. The Utah football team capped off an undefeated season by defeating rvial BYU, 48-24, in front of a packed house of 46,000 fans. With the victory, the Utes clinched the Mountain West Conference Championship and qualified for the "BCS" bowl series. They will be headed to Miami (Orange Bowl), New Orleans (Sugar Bowl) or Phoenix (Fiesta Bowl) come the New Year. Their destination will be announced on December 7.

Many of the Utah soccer players attended the game. When questioned, many even admitted to "storming" the field after the game to celebrate with the football team...attending the other sporting events and supporting their friends on the other teams is an important part of the experience for our soccer players. With so much excitement going on, it is bound to increase everyone's appetite....good thing Thanksgiving is here...lots of home cookin' this weekend. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
