Fueling Up For Soccer...Top 10

We are lucky enough here at Utah to have our very own Dietician in the Athletics Department. Beth Wolfgram works full time for us as well as all of the other Varsity Sports to help with anything and everything that we need as far as nutrition and diet go. Beth is a great asset to our department! Here is a list of soccer-specific nutrition tips that Beth has put together for our team as well as any other soccer athletes out there. Check it out:

Top 10 Tips for Fueling Up For Soccer

  • 1. What you fuel your body with affects your speed, agility, balance, coordination and mental acuity.
  • 2. Try to never skip breakfast – it fuels your muscles and brain so you can train hard during the day.
  • 3. Carbohydrates are what your body runs on! Your body and brain function best when fueled by foods like fruits, veggies, rice, pasta, breads and cereals.
  • 4. Every meal or snack should include some carbohydrates and some protein. For example: glass of milk and a banana, turkey sandwich, pasta with meat sauce, rice with chicken, handful of almonds with a pear
  • 5. For every pound of body weight you lose during a game or a practice you should drink 24 ounces of water to rehydrate.
  • 6. Quick pre game or pre practice snacks – toast with jam or honey, non fat fruit flavored yogurt, cereal or granola bar, pretzels and a piece of fruit. This snack should be mostly carbohydrates and easy to digest.
  • 7. Sports drinks provide much needed fluids and carbohydrates during activity.
  • 8. Healthy sources of fat include avocados (and guacamole), peanut butter (and other nut butters), as well as, raw nuts.
  • 9. Eat something (a meal or a snack) every 3-4 hours to fuel your body and your brain.
  • 10.To recover from a game or practice try to eat as soon as you can after. If you can’t eat a meal within an hour, try a snack and then a meal later.

Stay tuned for more tips periodically...you will be amazed with the results!

Utes Defeat Westminster

It was a bitter cold, windy evening at the Westminster Field- but the turf was nice and the teams were energized. Lauren Porter netted the Utes' first goal on a great header. Hanna Terry bent one in from 20 yards out to give the Utes a 2-0 lead, and Lauren Hair finished a Penalty Kick to seal the deal at 3-0. The game was a hard-fought, physical one and both teams did some good things. Our team showed a lot of toughness and created some good offensive opportunities while staying strong in the back. There are still many strides to be made, but it was a great victory and a step in the right direction! Here is a bit of what the game looked like:

Boxx is no rookie to international play as yesterday was notch 21 in her international scoring belt. Kristine Lilly became the most capped international player in soccer history yesterday, tallying her 343rd international cap in San Diego; Lilly also became the first player in U.S. history to play for her nation in 4 different decades.

Mexico also boasts great talent on the field possessing incredibly tough defenders, a skilled midfield, and a dangerous font line...wednesday's game is sure to be a competitive one. The teams are arriving here in Utah this evening- stay tuned for more details and pictures!

This upcoming game is a great opportunity for any soccer fan to be exposed to the highest level of women's soccer and the greatest caliber of players in the world. Spring Soccer!

Spring Season, or the off-season in college soccer is much different than the season. The majority of our time is spent on fitness, conditioning, strength, and a whole lot of individual work and training. However, we are allowed 5 game days during the off-season. This past weekend marked our first 2 spring games as well as our first time outside since the fall! The first game last Saturday was played against Sam Houston State; the team played well and Erin Dalley netted an early goal that was the eventual game winner (Hanna Terry had the assist). After the 1-0 victory, the team had a quick turnaround and took on a very good Texas A&M squad that same night. The Aggies came out on top 3-0, scoring all 3 goals on set plays, but the team was positive and it was a good reminder of some aspects of the game that the Utes need to sharpen up before fall comes around.

About the weekend, Coach Rich Manning said, ""The most important thing about this weekend was that the team saw its hard work start to pay off," said Manning. "They have been making strides in a lot of areas during spring practice and I think the team left the weekend feeling pretty encouraged. Based on the fact that it is only March, I thought our fitness level was great, our teamwork was very good and by the end of the day, our ball movement was strong."

Check out our official website for more notes on the game.

Meet Our New Coaches

Ryan Crabbe and Mariel Wilner are the two newest faces joining our team this spring. Crabbe is coming from a Division III school in Indiana, Saint Mary's College. Wilner has spent her past few years as a Volunteer Assistant at Penn State. Although both coaches are coming from far away, the transition has been a smooth one so far and they are quickly becoming integrated with the team.

We want to extend a warm welcome to Ryan and Mariel. Please see our official website for more details, notes from the new coaches, and what Head Coach Rich Manning has to say about them.

Meet Coach Willis and Catch up on Spring Ball!

Coach Willis joined the Utah Strength and Conditioning team in August of 2009. He has been a great addition to our coaching staff as he brings years of experience of soccer-specific training. Coach Willis works with the team about 4 times per week- 2 of the days are in the weight room and the other 2 are on the field. Below is some footage from today's training session. The girls started off with some strength, fitness, and agility work; the team then played a competitive game of 'targets' while Hannah Turpen trained with our new Goalkeeper Coach (You will get to 'meet' the new coaches very soon!) Check out the video:

Don't forget- the team is heading to Texas A&M tomorrow- keep checking in for updates on the games this weekend!

A Glimpse of Spring Training

Training in the spring is different than during the season- at the beginning, the team is only allowed a certain number of hours together during the week and time spent training with the ball is extremely limited. Because of this, we focus a lot on speed training, strength work, fitness, and just getting some short and sweet playing time in when possible. The video below is from this morning's workouts. First, Coach Willis (our strength and conditioning coach) works on speed and agility with the girls. Next, the team plays a competitive game for about 30 minutes. Finally, the team splits off into groups doing individual training, some doing 'shuttle school' to improve their endurance in the cone shuttle fitness test, oh....and then there's La La (Lauren Hair)- she has mastered cone shuttles and is now in serious training to perfect her flip-throw for the upcoming season. Check it out:

New Ute: Percie Allen - Tough and Athletic

Percie Allen is a native of Utah who is currently at Brighton High School. She is pictured above with her Utah Force coach, Skyler Bell. She is not the first player to join the Ute soccer team from BHS...former team captain Danielle Sample is a Bengal as well. Allen is a defender who will bring a lot of energy and work ethic to our team. She is fast, tough and excellent at defending in one vs. one situations.

Here is what Coach Manning says about Percie:
"Percie was born with an alter ego for soccer. She is mild-mannered off the field, but ferocious once the whistle blows. She is a strong defender with a physical presence. She is a good athlete, crunching tackler and plays with a fearless passion. Percie has played several positions but we see her challenging for a spot in the center of the defense."

Welcome to Utah, Percie!

Utah Grad Amanda Feigt: Great European Adventure!

Former Utah great and Mountain West Conference MVP, Amanda Feigt, is off on a great European adventure! After 3 years as a strength and conditioning coach at North Dakota State University in Fargo, Amanda decided to get back into some serious soccer. So she landed in the Women's Bundesliga in Germany. The German 1st division is probably the most competitive in the world, after the WPS here in the U.S.

Amanda, pictured above right in Berlin with fellow American Kat Tarr from the University of Missouri, was signed by the Tennis Borussia Berlin club for the second half of the season. She just arrived there and is training with her new team as the winter break draws to a close.

Tennis is currently in 11th place in the 12-team league and must climb at least one spot to 10th by the end of the season in order to avoid relegation. Amanda was signed in order to bring some speed to the front line. Ute fans will remember that Amanda was also a standout on the Utah track team, winning the MWC heptathlon championship in 2006.

Check out more at the club's web site by clicking here (site is in German).
