Argentina's name and hot drink of choice
Well, two more days of practice and two more fun facts about Argentina!...
Tuesday morning, we learned from senior Chelsea Card that Argentina gets its name from the Latin word for silver. The land is fertile with minerals and early explorers and settlers went there looking for a jackpot.
This morning, Katy Reineke, taught us about mate, which is a very popular hot drink in parts of South America, including Argentina...where it is known as the "national drink". Mate is a "holly-like" herb that is used with hot water and a special metal straw. Some of our current players, like Emalee Rogers and Amanda Sanchez, who have traveled to South America, noted that yerba mate, the official name of the drink, is definitely an "acquired" taste.
